Herman Miller was a businessman from West Michigan in the United States. He helped his son-in-law, De Pree, to buy the Michigan Star Furniture Company. De Pree therefore decided to name the company after his father-in-law.
In the mid-twentieth century, the name Herman Miller was synonymous with modern furniture. Not everyone could appreciate this progressive idea at first. The company started working with great designers such as George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames. Charles and Ray Eames designs are produced both by Herman Miller and by Vitra . Vitra produces them primarily in Europe. Herman Miller does this for the rest of the world. By working together with celebrities, the company has produced design icons. After all, the furniture can still be seen as classics today.
But the company has worked with many more designers. Among others with Alexander Girard, Isamu Noguchi, Robert Propst and Ayse Birsel.
Herman Miller Awards
The company has received many awards over the years. For example, in 1989 they received the Carl Bertelsmann Prize. They received this for developing the concept of employee-ownership: the first company in the US to be honored in this way. Very special indeed. Most recently, in 2014, Herman Miller was named Best Large Showroom. Awards they more than deservedly obtained.
They still continue to design and produce furniture. In addition to the classics of the past, the manufacturing company also has many new designs in their lineup. The headquarters is located in Zeeland, Michigan. The company also has facilities in the United States, China, Italy, and the United Kingdom, among others. Herman Miller always strives to work on designs that will improve the world around us.
